"Circle of Life"[note ane] is a song from The Walt Disney Company 1994 animated moving-picture show The Lion King. Composed by Elton John, with lyrics by Tim Rice,[3] the song was performed by Carmen Twillie (the deep female lead vocals) and Lebo M. (opening vocals in Zulu) equally the motion picture's opening song.[4] In an interview, Rice said he was amazed at the speed with which John equanimous: "I gave him the lyrics at the beginning of the session at virtually 2 in the afternoon. By one-half-past iii, he'd finished writing and recording a stunning demo."[5] Elton John sang a pop version (with alternative lyrics) of the song with the London Community Gospel Choir, which was included in the motion picture's soundtrack and made into a music video.

The song was re-recorded in 2003 by the Disney Channel Circle of Stars, a group of actors and actresses who have appeared in Disney Channel television receiver series and original movies, for the anthology Disneymania 2. In 2017 American boyband 98° recorded a comprehend version of the song to assist promote a re-release of The Panthera leo King on Blu-ray as part of the Disney Signature Collection.[11] The single was released as a digital download on 22 September 2017.[12]

The song was remixed by Mat Zo which was released in the album Dconstructed on 22 April 2014.[13]

Critical reception [edit]

Troy J. Augusto from Cash Box wrote, "Elton's unique, radio-friendly voice and the song's powerful, dramatic production (courtesy of Chris Thomas) hateful broad, immediate success as the motion-picture show continues its amazing run at the box office."[14] Music writer James Masterton commented in his weekly UK chart commentary, "Deplorable to relate though information technology is some other rather unimpressive Elton John carol, unable to stand comparison with much of his classic output and is worryingly close in places to The One - arguably the terminal single of any value he put out."[15] Alan Jones from Music Week noted, "Elton is in philosophical mood hither and has a slightly continental flavour. Publicity for The Lion King movie from which the single is taken should button it into the Top 20."[16]

The music video for "Circle of Life" was directed by American motion picture composer, producer and film manager Richard Baskin.[17] Information technology was published on YouTube in November 2017. The video has clustered over thirteen million views equally of November 2021.[18]

In popular culture [edit]

Due to the film's universal touch on on pop culture, the song is oft referenced in other media.

"Circle of Life" was referenced in the song "Colors of the Current of air" which was composed by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz for Disney'southward 33rd blithe motion motion picture Pocahontas. The song'due south lyrics are about animism and respecting nature.

In one of Disney'southward many self-references, "The Circumvolve of Life" appeared equally a fake beginning of the film Craven Little, when Cadet was trying to open the pic.
